TRAUMALITY has won the Social Impact Award at the Activists Without Borders Film Festival, United Kingdom 2026.

The festival recognises films that set out to change something in the world rather than simply be watched. That is exactly what this film was made to do, so this award means a great deal.

A film made outside the system it questions

TRAUMALITY is independent and self-funded. There was no broadcaster, no studio and no commissioning body deciding what could or could not be said. It was made because no film existed that connected our experiences, our mental health and the systems built around us in one place.

It brings together 22 contributors: clinicians, researchers, psychiatrists, educators, campaigners and people with lived experience, alongside my own. It asks what has happened to people rather than what is wrong with them, and it looks honestly at how often our systems respond to distress by naming it instead of understanding it.

Awareness was never the end point. The question has always been what we do with what we now know.

What the award reflects

An award like this is not really about the film. It is about what has happened in the rooms where it has been shown.

  • A screening at the Tavistock Centre in London for NHS clinicians and lived-experience leaders, hosted by Dr Joanne Stubley.
  • An online screening for more than 100 NHS staff across South East Essex and beyond.
  • The Scottish premiere in Balerno, organised with Dr Suzanne Zeedyk and Scotland's ACEs Action Community.
  • Screenings in universities, schools and community venues, with a UK and Ireland tour continuing and dates being added around the world.

In each of those rooms the film did the same thing. It gave people permission to say what they had been carrying, and it started conversations that usually take years to begin.
