The Adverse Childhood Experiences study is one of the largest pieces of public health research ever carried out, and it changed what we understand about the long shadow of early adversity.

This scene sets out what the researchers found: the clear, dose-dependent relationship between childhood adversity and adult outcomes, from depression and addiction through to heart disease and autoimmune conditions. It is the evidence that makes it impossible to treat mental and physical health as separate things.

  • Why the findings cut across mental and physical health
  • What it means for how services assess and respond to distress
